History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

Presented by Mollie Battenhouse, Master of Wine, Jackson Family Wines, this tasting is a fun way to learn about how food and wine pair together and provides a framework for creating better pairings. We will taste a series of five wines that display or highlight the building blocks of wine: acid, sugar, tannin, alcohol and umami (deliciousness), along with a small plate of flavors that display the elements of food that affect the way food and wine interact: acid, sugar, protein, salt, fat and umami. The wines are tasted in a progression with different elements on the plate so that the participants understand how food can affect or enhance the way a wine tastes alongside it.
