History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.

The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

Explore the American semi-quincentennial with Rick Atkinson and F. Anderson Morse, while they discuss the causes, consequences, and characters of the war that gave birth to our nation.
Atkinson is author of The British Are Coming and The Fate of the Day, the first two volumes in a projected trilogy about the Revolution. The New York Times in reviewing the latter book wrote, “There is no better writer of narrative history than the Pulitzer Prize-winning Atkinson,” and the Wall Street Journal added that he “provides amazing detail and masterful staging.”

Rick Atkinson is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of seven previous works of history, including The Long Gray Line, the Liberation Trilogy (An Army at Dawn, The Day of Battle, and The Guns at Last Light), and The British Are Coming, the first volume of the Revolution Trilogy. He has won numerous awards, including Pulitzer Prizes for history and journalism. His latest book is The Fate of the Day.
F. Anderson “Andy” Morse
F. Anderson “Andy” Morse is the Executive Director of The Society of the Cincinnati and its educational division, the American Revolution Institute. He joined the Society staff in 2018, and previously he was the Director of Development at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Andy lives in Arlington, Virginia and is a member of the Georgia Society of the Cincinnati.

PAPER Professional, 100% cotton watercolor paper. I use Arches and Saunders 300# mostly Rough but sometimes Cold Press. 140# is fine but always use a good sheet of 100% cotton watercolor paper – no junk! You’ll never learn to paint watercolors on cheap paper, trust me! And painting outside has enough challenges without fighting your paper too!! Watercolor “blocks” are fine too, and they give you a rigid surface to use on an easel. MY PALETTE
