As part of the Preservation Society’s commemorations of America’s 250th anniversary, we invite you to stop by for our Open House Day at Hunter House in celebration of “French in Newport Day.” Come and go as you please, without the need to make reservations on this day.

Visit one of the finest examples of Colonial architecture in Newport and have the chance to be creative—all ages and ability levels welcome. Learn a little piece of history and how to make some fun colonial-inspired crafts.

Hunter House was the home of wealthy merchant shipowners and Colonial politicians, as well as the people they enslaved. During the Revolutionary War, Hunter House’s Loyalist owners fled and the house became the headquarters of Admiral de Ternay, commander of the French naval fleet when it was stationed in Newport. Hunter House was the first property saved by the Preservation Society, in 1945.
