Explore the tools, techniques and decision-making processes that conservators are adopting to investigate and stabilize painted and varnished pieces of furniture from The Breakers. The Breakers is home to one of the largest known original furniture collections of A.H. Davenport & Co. (1880-1914), one of the nation’s leading suppliers of luxury furniture during the Gilded Age. Participants will have the special opportunity to see in-progress treatment work and learn about the technical, environmental and ethical factors that conservators must consider before, during and after treatment to ensure the protection of our collection.

Isabella Hogan, Preservation Society Conservation Research Fellow, earned a BA in Archaeology: First Class from the University of Cambridge, King’s College, England, and was awarded the Glyn Daniel Prize and Scholar of the College status due to distinguished academic performance. She further excelled at the University of Durham, where she earned an MA in Conservation of Archaeological and Museum Objects: Distinction.

Hogan has worked as a Project Conservator for the Maritime Museum in Liverpool, England, and as a Conservation Intern for the Mary Rose Trust in Portsmouth, England, the Ancient Agora, in Athens, Greece, and the Bevaringscenter Fyn in Langeland, Denmark.
