History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

One of the benefits of your membership at the Preservation Society is our yearly State of Collections lecture, given by Director of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator Leslie Jones and Chief Conservator Patty Miller. This lecture covers the work that has occurred at our properties over the last year, and what to look for down the line. This is a unique opportunity, exclusive to members, to learn about the exciting preservation initiatives. Registration is required, but participation is complimentary.

Leslie B. Jones Director of Museum Affairs & Chief Curator
Ms. Jones has been with the Preservation Society since 2019, overseeing curatorial efforts, conservation, collections management, site stewardship, exhibitions, and interpretation across Newport’s Gilded Age properties. Her academic training: BA in History of Art & Architecture and Arts Management from Miami University (Ohio); MA in History of Decorative Arts (Smithsonian Institution/Corcoran); MCert. in Appraisal of Fine & Decorative Art from New York University. Prior roles include Vice President, Museum Affairs & Curator of Decorative Arts at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens (Nashville) and Curator & Director of Historical Resources and Programming for the White House Historical Association (DC). Ms. Jones has curated and contributed to the development of, to date, 18 exhibitions including projects at the National Trust for Historic Preservation sites of Decatur House and Woodlawn Plantation, Cheekwood, Washington Winter Antiques Show, Powerhouse Museum (Sydney, AUS), and the Preservation Society of Newport County.
Patricia Miller Chief Conservator
Patricia leads The Preservation Society’s conservation team, overseeing small- and large-scale projects involving the assessment and treatment of historic and artistic works including monuments, sculptures, buildings, fountains, archaeological objects, and other historic artifacts. Recent projects include the cleaning and assessment of outdoor sculpture at The Breakers; architectural surveying and restoration of the Isaac Bell House; and meticulous research and restoration of donated and purchased objects belonging to the PS collection.

The Preservation Society of Newport County is getting into the Spirit of 2026 with an insightful exhibition, theatrical performances bringing Newport’s Revolutionary history to life, programs for children and a series of lectures by leading voices in the field of American history and arts.
To mark the U.S. Semiquincentennial, "Revolution Reimagined: Evolving Stories from Newport’s Past" explores Newport’s vital role in the American Revolution through the lens of myth and memory. Exhibition is included with admission to Rosecliff.
The play “Loyalty or Liberty” highlights the difficult choices faced by many during the American Revolution and explores themes of freedom, honor, duty and love in times of uncertainty. Tuesday, Sept. 1, rain location is Rosecliff.
