During the first era of globalization in the 1850s and 1860s, a booming global bond market fueled unprecedented growth, with the Rothschilds at its center. Capital financed railroads and governments alike—but also rampant speculation and reckless borrowing. When the bubble burst in the early 1870s, markets from Vienna to New York collapsed; railroads and governments defaulted, and officials worsened the crisis through disastrous currency reforms.

As Liaquat Ahamed shows, the Panic of 1873 helped derail Reconstruction, hastened the Ottoman Empire’s decline, and unleashed virulent antisemitism. 1873 offers a sweeping, human-centered account of a world-changing financial collapse. Liaquat Ahamed will be joined in conversation by Kate Petterson, Education and Programs Manager at The Preservation Society of Newport County, to discuss his newly released book.
