History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

This is an exclusive opportunity to tour our newly developed off-site Collections Care Facility and meet members of our dedicated collections care team. Textile Conservator Katy O’Donnell will highlight costumes from our collection and go over museum storage techniques for textiles. You can even try your hand at assembling an archival padded hanger that you can donate to us for use in storing our historic garments or take home for the storage of your own precious heirlooms. Collections Manager Lauren Landi and Collection Move Registrar Andrew Faintych will discuss the development of this facility and share stories about our ongoing collection moves.
