History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

The 2024 Newport Flower Show will be back at Rosecliff, its original home, with the theme of “At Home” – celebrating the variety of florals and horticulture that we enjoy in our own homes.
As visitors step into the foyer of Rosecliff, the air will be filled with the fragrances of abundant summer blooms. The enchanting exhibits will showcase the relationship between flowers and the homes they beautify. The popular Botanical Arts division will include artists’ interpretations of items found in many homes: dolls, picture frames, the family dog and more.
After viewing the displays in the Salon, Ballroom and Dining Room, guests will step onto the Terrace to admire the Horticulture entries and then the oceanside back lawn to explore a beautiful central garden display including a cutting garden, home orchard and pollinator garden, along with ideas to create a picturesque setting for outdoor living.
Be sure to browse the Marketplace, offering a variety of floral and plant options as well as home decor items for purchase.
“At Home” will be a celebration of the beauty that flowers and plants bring to the spaces we call home. Whether you’re a flower enthusiast, a gardening hobbyist or someone seeking inspiration for home decor, this show promises a feast for the senses and a unique perspective on the intersection of nature and your home, indoors and out.
Opening Night Reception
Friday, June 21, 6-8 pm Special ticket required Join us at this annual event that kicks off the Newport summer season! Sip, shop and socialize with delicious food and cocktails while admiring the fresh floral exhibits, horticultural displays and botanical arts creations.

This exhibition explores a largely unknown but important chapter in American history: the experience of a thriving African heritage community in Newport.

Fans of HBO’s "The Gilded Age" will love this guide-led tour of locations in four of the Newport Mansions where the show was filmed. Tuesdays and Fridays only, May 17 through June 28. Tickets now available.
Black Newporters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries had idiosyncratic, localized approaches to politics that differed from the conventional narrative of the time. Dr. Myra Armstead of Bard College will explain how these African Americans gave their own meaning to what collectively may be called independent politics.
