Lecture: Newport's Gilded Age Yachtsmen
Wednesday, August 24, 2016
Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue, Newport
Dr. Robert MacKay, Fine Arts Committee Chair, New York Yacht Club
Newport was the cradle of many of the nation's nascent recreational pursuits. One pastime however, played a much greater role in the development of the "queen of resorts" than the others. Yachting was the catalyst that led to its golden age, the privatization of the resort and the yachtsmen of Bellevue Avenue. Dr. MacKay tells the fascinating story of the sport's tremendous impact on Newport and its built environment.
