History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

Discover the sculptures made with LEGO® bricks at Green Animals! We will explore the deer sculptures in the garden, play deer games and learn more about the lives of these local animals before making deer crafts. For children 5-7 years old (older and younger siblings welcome). Children must be accompanied by caregivers. This program is inspired by the Growing Up WILD “Oh Deer!” lesson from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
Tuesdays in the Garden provides families a fun and creative way to connect with The Preservation Society’s Green Animals Topiary Garden through Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects sculptures. Programs will relate to elements of the garden and explore how our natural world is interconnected, using garden sculptures for inspiration.
