The Preservation Society Of Newport County offers unique and exclusive
tour experiences set in Gilded Age American National Historic Landmarks
including The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms. Inspired by the
Palace of Versailles, French chateaus, and Italianate palaces these
Newport “Cottages” were designed to impress.
Customize your own unique and exclusive tour experience by arranging
Private and Personal Tours. Your guide will lead you through your choice
of our historic houses spanning three centuries of American art,
architecture, social history and landscapes. Up to 10 persons per tour.
The most exclusive experiences are Private Tours offered only at limited
times of day when our house museums are not otherwise open to touring
by the public. Your Private Tour guide will greet you and lead you
through the opulent ballrooms and sedate bedrooms of the wealthy summer
residents of a bygone era. You’ll hear the stories of railroad tycoons
and dollar princesses, yachtsmen, heiresses, and merchants, stories of
the Vanderbilt, Berwind, and Oelrich families and many more. These
summer “cottages” or mansions, as we now call them, were used for only 6
– 8 weeks each year. Private Tours are available beginning June 29th,
2019 and are limited in availability.
Personal Tours of our historic house museums continue to be available
during normal operating hours by prior arrangement. Your Personal Tour
Guide will lead you through your choice of house museum(s), informing
you about the art, architecture and lifestyles of the former residents
of these “summer cottages” while the public is also touring.
These experiences are available for individuals, couples, families,
friends, and corporate groups up to 10. Arrangements may be made for
Multiple Private and Personal Tours may be combined to provide your
Custom Tour Experience, based upon your interests and availability.
Also available individually or in combination with a Personal or Private
Tour are the two uniquely different “behind-the-scenes” experiences. At
The Breakers, consider combining your house tour with a Private Beneath
The Breakers Tour for a unique look at the underground systems that
made such a monumental house work… Or complement your Elms Private Tour
with a Private Tour of the Servant’s Life at The Elms to get a real
sense of the Upstairs/Downstairs lifestyles.
