History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

THIS CLASS IS FILLED
Commodore Matthew Perry, Newport native, made history when his expedition (1853) to Japan led to opening up Japan to America and the world. Pearls, indeed!

Design Style: Asian Style emphasizes minimalism, line and harmony between nature and humanity.
The Gilded Age saw social climbing raised to an art form. And the masters, three of the original “Pearls of Newport” – Alva Vanderbilt, Mamie Fish, and Tessie Oelrichs.

From the windows of Rosecliff looking towards the ocean, one can see the fountain where flappers and dapper men danced in the fountain in scenes form “The Great Gatsby” with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Local Newporters were the extras dancing in that fountain.”

An enduring favorite of brides the world over, Newport has seen more than its fair share of brides. Many a bride has descended the Heart-shaped staircase to say, “I Do”.

Design Style: May be either traditional or modern as defined below.
*Mass Design (Modern): Groupings of limited varieties of plant material with emphasis on bold design, blocks of color, contrasting forms and textures.
*Mass Design (Traditional): Profusion of flowers of various forms and sizes arranged in an oval, triangular or fan-shaped design, a closed silhouette having more solids than voids.
The Cliff Walk of Newport hugs the shore of the Atlantic Ocean for three and a half miles offering guests some of the most glorious views of both nature and architecture.

Design Style: Miniature Design is defined by not exceeding 5 inches in any direction. Design will be placed on an 8”H x 8”W x 8”D open niche painted Rosecliff White. Underlays and Backgrounds are allowed as long as they do not damage the niche.

This class is only open to Novices defined as Designers who have never won a Blue Ribbon in the Newport Flower Show in the Floral Design Division.
This ballroom has been the scene of the “Pearls” of Newport moving in harmony for more than a century.

Design Style: Multi-Rhythmic is defined as a creative style focusing on two or more distinct, yet coexisting, rhythms often with one dominating. These lines may move in any direction – continuous, interrupted, or crossed.
