History of Newport and the Mansions
Founded in 1639, Newport was an important port city, a center of the slave trade, a fashionable resort and the summer home of the Gilded Age rich.
What was the Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age was a period of unprecedented change in America. Fortunes were spent on luxuries such as the lavish "summer cottages" of Newport.

CLASS IS FULL
Take a stroll—real or imagined—through Newport’s storied neighborhoods, where front doors greet the world with charm, flair, and the occasional flourish. This year, eight garden clubs are invited to transform a classic Newport doorway into a horticultural “welcome home.”
Each club will style a dark green door with white side walls, mounted on a fixed display platform (staging may not be altered). Your mission: dress this dignified entry with container plantings and a planted door ornament that would make any passerby pause in delight. Accessories are allowed. Sub classes will celebrate two Newport styles: Coastal Cottage and Traditional Estate. Exact staging dimensions to follow.
Invitation only.
Limited to 8 Garden Club entrants. Pre-registration required.
Special Notes:
Door Decoration may be created as a Pot de Fleur and will be judged as such within the overall judging of the entry (including door decoration and any additional containers/plantings). Pot de Fleur is defined as: a combination of rooted plants and cut flowers and/or foliage (conditioned to last for the duration of the show) assembled together. Scale of Points listed above will apply to all portions of the entry.
Few joys say “summer has arrived!” quite like an exuberant window box spilling over with color. Eight gardeners are invited to create a sun-loving, joy-giving window box to adorn the rear steps of Rosecliff—an iconic perch for flowerful excess.
Window boxes may measure up to 36″ long and 12″ wide.
Limited to 8 entrants. Pre-registration required.
Raise your tower and raise a smile! In honor of the Flower Show’s 30th year, exhibitors are invited to plant a stackable tower planter—provided by the Show—with an irresistible array of edible plants. Think herbs, leafy greens, compact veggies, tiny fruits, and edible flowers cascading in delicious abundance.
Arrange your edible layers with both beauty and appetite in mind, creating a vertical garden that could turn any terrace, stoop, or balcony into a bite-sized Eden. Accessories are allowed, but every leaf and bloom must be edible.
Limited to 4 entrants. Pre-registration required.
In thirty years since The Newport Flower Show’s return, perennial gardening has flourished—quietly, steadily, and spectacularly. This class celebrates foliage in all its forms: bold, delicate, fuzzy, glossy, ruffled, rigid, or romantically cascading.
Four gardeners are invited to create mixed, hardy perennial planters composed solely of foliage plants, in the container of their choice. Accessories are not allowed. Entries will be displayed under the rear terrace awning at Rosecliff, where shade and leafy serenity await.
If Newport’s Gilded Age estates were sometimes mocked for being “too small,” just imagine what the fairies thought! This class invites four entrants to create a miniature Newport estate—complete with pint-sized plantings, pocket-sized pathways, and fairy-friendly architectural whimsy.
Each exhibitor will be provided a 32″ circular planter, 8″ deep. Accessories are allowed. Planter may be painted.
Celebrate the delightful art of giving the unexpected a second life! Exhibitors are invited to turn a found object—be it teacup, tackle box, watering can, stray boot, or mystery attic treasure—into a playful, succulent-filled showpiece.
All plant material must be succulents, and the object must be genuinely found, not manufactured for planting. Let creativity lead the way as you pair hardy plants with an object full of personality. Sizing and weight follow the Show’s general Rules & Guidelines.
Limited to 6 entrants. Pre-registration required.
In the three decades since The Newport Flower Show’s rebirth, perhaps no gardening shift has been more profound—or more hopeful—than the turn toward ecological stewardship. This year, eight professionals are invited to create a habitat planter designed as prime real estate for wildlife: birds, bees, butterflies, or any other garden visitor that delights the senses and supports the planet.
The Show will provide large 36″ × 36″ planters. Accessories are allowed. Installations occur on-site, Wednesday, June 17. A statement of intent and planting plan are required.
Photo Key Cards are required for all entries in this division.
Please provide a color image (approx. 3” x 5”) of your planting, with each plant marked by a letter. In the space provided, write the binomial Latin name, followed by the common name.
Your key card must fit within a 5.25” x 8.25” landscape format.
Please see the example Key Card below. Two templates are included on the next page for your use and reference.
If you would like us to construct your Key Card, please submit your digital image to Lisa Hansel, lhansel@newportmansions.org no later than June 17, 2026 at 5:00 pm. Please include your name, organization, cell phone and division, within the body of the email.
