Gallery Talk: The Vanderbilts Go Yachting
Thursday, June 9, 2016
Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue, Newport
John Rousmaniere, author and marine historian
From the Commodore's voyage to Europe in North Star in 1853, to his great-grandson Harold's three America's Cup victories in the 1930s, four generations of Vanderbilts were famous for their spectacular yachts and the great variety of ways they used them. Luxurious steam yachts, fast anti-submarine patrol boats, oceanographic research vessels, seagoing schooners, racing sailboats of all sizes - the Vanderbilt fleet was varied, active, adventurous, and often controversial.
