REMEMBERING NEWPORT: A COMMUNITY RESEARCH PROJECT

Preserving the photographs from the Ernst Studio of Newport, Rhode Island.

The Preservation Society of Newport County has aquired a collection of 509 photographs taken by Ernst family members.  The images present an insight into Newport and its citizens during the first half of the twentieth century.  These include portraits, weddings, social events, the military and police, landscapes, hunt scenes, “house portraits” and shots of other buildings, and water views capturing on film the harbor, beaches, and yachts.

Our Objective: To invite the community to help gather information on Newport's people and places captured in preserved photographs from the Ernst Studio. Many of the photographs from the Preservation Society's collections will be on display at our headquarters building, 424 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.  They will be on display from June 11, 2005 through November 11, 2005.  A roundtable discussion will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 11:00 am.

History of the Ernst Studio:
The people and places of Newport were captured in over 500 photographs taken by the husband and wife team, William and Alphonsine Ernst, of the Ernst Studio. The Ernsts were an artistic duo who photographed Newport residents and their city in the first half of the 20th century. They were later joined by their daughter, Marie-Jeanne. The Ernst Studio was located at 126 Bellevue Avenue, opposite Prospect Hill Street, from 1909 to 1965. Weddings, high school graduating classes, the police and fire departments, religious orders, houses, coastal scenery, hurricane damage, and sailboats were all photographed by the popular Ernst Studio. The Preservation Society acquired this collection of photographs in order to preserve a visual record of Newport’s citizens, buildings, and scenery. As the Preservation Society celebrates 60 years of working to preserve Newport’s rich architectural, artistic, and cultural heritage, the Ernst Studio photographs serve to remind us of how images capture the spirit of our community over time.
