(Newport, RI)—The fifth grade students at Newport's Coggeshall School won the $2,000 first prize in The Preservation Society of Newport County’s annual tabletop “Trimmed for Santa” Christmas tree decorating contest, with their "Grinch" tree. Fifth-graders from seven Newport schools decorated small Christmas trees that were on display at The Elms during the holiday season. Visitors to the mansion were invited to vote for their favorite tree.  A total of 4,253 votes were cast.

The Underwood School came in second, and third place went to the Sullivan School.  Also participating were Cranston-Calvert, St. Michael's, Cluny and Carey Schools.  Each of those six schools will be awarded $500 prizes. The prize money, underwritten by an anonymous donor, will support the schools’ visual arts programs.  The annual tree contest is coordinated by Preservation Society Associate Curator Charles Burns and staff member Elizabeth Casella.

“This is a fun and rewarding event for everyone involved," said Preservation Society CEO and Executive Director Trudy Coxe. “We're very pleased to be able to make this opportunity available for the children to show off their art work to thousands of visitors at The Elms, to earn money for their schools' arts programs, and to visit The Elms themselves with their parents and learn about its history."
